Yankees pitcher presumed dead after plane crashes into high-rise

A small plane carrying New York Yankee Cory Lidle slammed into a 50-story skyscraper Wednesday, apparently killing the pitcher and a second person in a crash that rained flaming debris onto the sidewalks and briefly raised fears of another terrorist attack.

Secretary of state drops controversial proposed rule change

Secretary of State Gigi Dennis has decided to drop proposed changes to a campaign finance rule that led to a lawsuit by labor unions and prompted Democrats to accuse the Republican of partisanship in running the state's elections.

Cross-country finishes fifth, seventh

All things considered, between the overnight travel, the muddy, challenging course and the thought of the homecoming dance back home, Steamboat Springs cross-country coach Glen Light was pleased with the Sailors' performance at the Chris Severy Cross Country Invitational Saturday in Aspen.

Bikers take third at state

Steamboat was able to take third place Sunday at the Colorado Scholastic Mountain Bike Championship at Beaver Creek Resort, despite competing with just three riders out of five allowed.

Event hosted by forensics team hits boiling point several times

A candidates debate Thursday night reached the boiling point on several occasions, with election foes sparring about qualifications and political records. The debate, hosted by the Steamboat Springs High School forensics team, drew about 60 people, who were encouraged to submit questions for the candidates before the debate began.

New member sworn in; urban boundary changes denied

The Steamboat Springs City Council selected psychotherapist Karen Post as its new District 3 representative Tuesday, returning the council to its full size of seven members.

Enrollment up in each district

The number of enrolled students has increased in each Routt County public school district this year. All Colorado school districts recently submitted their enrollment numbers - based on the Oct. 2 official count day - to the state. Colorado public schools are primarily funded on a per-pupil basis.

A land swap between the Bureau of Land Management and the State Land Board would accomplish the goal set out by the Emerald Mountain Partnership of preserving the land located in the portion of Emerald Mountain north and east of Cow Creek Road.

Mark MacHale: Help local schools

On Nov. 7, voters will have a chance to approve funding to help Steamboat Springs Schools continue their history of providing a first class education to local children. As the principal of Strawberry Park Elementary, I would like to make a passionate plea for your "yes" vote on issues 3C and 3D.
