"A black bear reportedly stole a garbage can out of a garage in the 3000 block of Trails Edge. Officers scared off the bear."

A bear STOLE a garbage can? How about laying this at the feet of the property owner who provided access to said garbage can?

Well, the report doesn't say if the garage was left open or not. Maybe the bear broke a door or something to that effect in order to get in.

Years ago, I was watching a "60-minutes"-type show, and they did a segment on bears in the Poconos. Development encroaching on bear habitat, leading to a spike in bear-human encounters - wake up in the morning to find a bear in your kitchen, etc.

The correspondent hooks up with a bear expert, who leads them into the woods to look at the bears. They get to within 100 yards of a mama bear & her cubs. As they're standing & talking, mama catches a whiff of them. She stands up & growls.

Menacingly.

The correspondent looks at the bear guy & says "don't you think we should head back to the van?"

The bear guy says "well, mama here can to zero to 30 in nothin' flat. If she decides she wants you, you won't make it back to the van."

At that point, watching on tv, the picture was lost. The cameraman had obviously decided 'eff this - I'm outta here!

I sincerely hope so. It is time for Steamboat to send a strong message to the ursine community that such behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances. I sleep soundly, so confident am I that Mr. St. James is on the case.
