Steamboat Springs — Pueblo West golfer Zach Zaremba started the day six strokes behind the leaders at the class 4A state high school golf championship.
He ended the day with a new course record and his first state title.
"I just realized last night that I was only six shots out," Zaremba said. "I thought about it and was like 'six shots.' Someone made up six shots on me last night.
"I knew I could do it, and that's what I did."
Zaremba's 65 on Tuesday is the best round anyone has recorded from the championship tees at the 7,308-yard, par-72 Haymaker Golf Course. The previous best was a 67 by Rick Dewitt in 2000.
The record score gave Zaremba a two-day total of 138 and a surprisingly easy three-shot win. Kent Denver's Gunner Wiebe, Cheyenne Mountain's Justin Spray, Peak to Peak's Kaleb Mahanes and Colorado Academy's Mark Hubbard finished in a four-way tie for second place with a total of 141.
First-round leader and defending state champion Nick Umholtz of Greeley Central shot a 73 Tuesday, dropping him to sixth place at 142.
Zaremba's effort wasn't enough to move his team past Kent Denver for the team title.
Kent Denver, which led the first day, held on to win the state title with a final score of 428. Pueblo West was second at 437, Greeley Central was third at 441, Cheyenne Mountain was fourth at 448 and Ralston Valley was fifth with 460.
