Bob Enever: Thanks, planners

I want to congratulate and give my unreserved support to the members of the Steamboat Springs Planning Commission for refusing to enlarge the Urban Growth Boundary. Many who have land on the margins want to increase its value, so inevitably there will be great pressure to expand the boundary.
Many of us who love our unique little town want to slow the rate of growth so our values do not become inundated by the values of those moving in from conurbations. Our uniqueness and friendliness, so hyped by the tourist and real estate industries, can survive only so much dilution. If it went under and were drowned, it would be a great sorrow to us, and those industries would find themselves trying to sell a "has been" uniqueness and friendliness. Our uniqueness and our friendliness is the goose that lays the golden eggs of tourist and real estate dollars. We're all in this together.
The Urban Growth Boundary is our last bastion to slow the rate of growth, so it doesn't destroy the "us-ness" of us. I hope the City Council will defend it as vigorously as the Planning Commission has.
