The Steamboat Springs softball team lost both games that they played against Rifle on Saturday, 14-1 and 27-0. Sailor coach Donna Ryan said the Bears, who are at top of the Western Slope League, were probably the best team that Steamboat has played all year. The Sailors were also down three starters and had to play girls with limited experience. Ryan pointed out the solid play of Tina Weeden, Catie Winter and Priska Sorensen as highlights. All three girls were playing positions they had never played before, Ryan said. Ryan said she was happy with the effort her team showed and the effort they've showed all year.

"The girls always have a really good attitude," Ryan said. "They kept their spirits up in a difficult situation."

The Sailors next play at Palisade on Tuesday.

Hayden volleyball upsets Plateau Valley Cowboy

The Hayden Tigers put upended the Plateau Valley Cowboys in four games, 25-22, 22-25, 25-10, 25-21, Friday night. Coming into the game, the Cowboys were ranked in the top 10 in both Denver newspapers. Senior Jacquelyn Denker said the win will give the Tigers a great deal of confidence heading into the ladder portion of their season.

"It felt good knowing that they're a top ranked team and we beat them like that," she said. "It's a big step. I think if we play exactly like we did Friday, then we can do pretty darn good. I think we're pretty confident we just can't be over confident. We're just going to have to fight the rest of the season."

The Tigers next play at Soroco on Friday.

State golf tournament kicks off at Haymaker

More than 80 golfers and 12 teams will all be vying for state championships today. The two-day tournament will feature some of the best young golfers in the state, including last year's state champion Nick Umholtz from Greeley Central, Kent Denver's Gunner Wiebe (son of professional golfer Mark Wiebe) and Steamboat's own Paul Berry. Tee-times begin at 10 a.m. on No. 1 and No. 10 tees. The Sailors, which qualified as a team, start play when Billy Taylor tees off at 10 a.m. on hole No. 10. Michael Weston, Tucker Campbell and Berry will follow Taylor in consecutive groups. Spectators are welcome to come out and support the Sailors.
