William and Jan van Straaten: Thanks, teens

There is much to complain about when it comes to the behavior of teenagers in this area, but a recent incident occurred that demonstrated uncommon good character on the part of a group of eight high school boys. We wanted to share this story with the community because such exemplary behavior deserves recognition.

These boys took responsibility for a careless destructive act that resulted in a window of our building at 11th and Oak streets being shattered, showering shards of glass onto an individual inside the building and onto the driveway below.

Instead of running away, the boys came to apologize and clean up the glass. They also said they would pay for the replacement of the broken window, which they did.

We doubt that they would want their names published in connection with this incident, but we suppose they will recognize themselves in this letter. Their parents may not be aware of this matter, but they should be very proud that their sons took responsibility for their actions. These young men deserve to feel proud of themselves for doing what they knew was right, even though they risked serious consequences in doing so.

Fortunately no one was injured, and we can say that these fellows, who appeared to be freshmen or sophomores, earned our respect through the demonstration of their sense of responsibility.
