Steamboat students named AP scholars Steamboat springs
Ten Steamboat Springs High School students have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board for their achievements on the Advanced Placement Program Exam.
Those students were Alyssa Pierson, Travis Mouffe, Jennifer Spencer, Christopher Troeger, Jake Epley, Andrew Hoing, Cody Kurowski, Kelly Labor, Charles Stoddard and Kristin Toy.
Pierson qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more exams.
The AP tests are the culmination of challenging college-level courses. The AP tests were administered in the spring and are used as a way for students to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both, based on test scores.
Mouffe, Spencer and Troeger qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more exams.
The remaining six high school students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher.
Students put together packages for troops
Steamboat Springs Middle and High School students are putting together care packages to send to U.S. troops stationed overseas. Dubbed "Operation Sending Smiles," the students are seeking donations of money, prepackaged snacks, hot chocolate, coffee, beef jerky, trail mix, nuts, socks, long-sleeve shirts, blankets, movies (DVDs), music (CDs), magazines and prepaid calling cards (so troops can call home).
All donations can be dropped off at Johnny B. Good's in downtown Steamboat Springs. The students also plan to hold bake sales to raise money for the project. For more information, call Ashton or Sheila Palmer at 736-8379.
