Steamboat Springs Several local groups are hosting one of the foremost experts on changing social and economic climates in resort communities.
The city of Steamboat Springs, Routt County Economic Development Cooperative, Main Street Steamboat Springs and Yampa Valley Partners will welcome Jonathan Schechter for a two-day presentation Dec. 4 to 5. The presentation begins at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 4.
Schechter is the executive director of the Charture Institute in Jackson, Wyo. The Charture Institutes is a nonprofit organization that provides data about resort communities so citizens can make choices for the future of their communities.
Schechter will present information about communities around the nation that had some of the top dollar increases in their median home prices. Schechter believes the boom transforming these communities is based on lifestyle and environment, rather than traditional economic development.
Audrey Danner, executive director for Yampa Valley Partners, said Schechter also will provide tools to help address changes in the valley and help people understand the broader context in which the changes are occurring.
"The challenges facing the Yampa Valley include significant changes in industry and people," Danner said. "We all see changes in Routt County from the emerging industries of early retirees and second-home owners and the Moffat County change from energy exploration.
"Jonathan Schechter's presentation will offer the opportunity to not only understand our demographics, but also to help us with some common tools to address these significant changes."
One of the tools Schechter will explain is the process used in Teton County in Wyoming. Schechter has made a model for Jackson Hole and will present it to the people of Steamboat.
The first part of the program is a presentation by Schechter at Centennial Hall, called "Dynamics of Growth in Resort Communities." After the presentation, Schechter will facilitate a discussion. Then, from 8 to 10 a.m. Dec. 5, Schechter will present "Models of Change."
Anyone interested in attending should RSVP by Wednesday by e-mailing Danner at Audrey@yampavalleypartners.com.
