— Artisans from across Northwest Colorado will converge in Yampa on Saturday to share their unique products during the 26th annual Yampa Arts and Craft Fair.

Nita Naugle, one of the event's organizers, said she expects strong attendance from local artisans as well as vendors from around the state. The fair is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at South Routt Elementary School.

"You never quite know what all people will bring, but we expect to see everything from handmade soaps and bath products to fine arts, lamps, jewelry and hats and scarves," Naugle said.

The fair has grown over the years from two women setting up a few booths to dozens of artisans taking over the elementary school's gymnasium, hallways and cafeteria.

"One of our main objectives is to just keep the fair alive and running. There is a niche and a place for it in this community," she said. "It's amazing how many people produce such wonderful things and can have an outlet to share those."

Unlike most craft fairs, the Yampa Arts and Craft Fair is sponsored by the Edith Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and is the nonprofit organization's main fundraiser for the year.

"We take the proceeds we make from the fair and send them to fund local, state and national projects. There are all sorts of things we do with that money," Naugle said.

Last year, the Edith Chapter donated books to the South Routt Elementary School.

"It's pretty unique for a craft fair," she said.

Naugle also said Saturday will feature a special guest the whole family can enjoy.

"Santa Claus is making a special early visit around 3 p.m. for our youngest visitors," she said.

Lunch can be purchased at the fair for $5. Saturday's menu includes sloppy Joes, hot dogs, chips, pickles, drinks and a variety of homemade pies. Fairgoers also will receive a raffle ticket for a gift basket giveaway.
