Tattoo of the week: Dawn Obrecht
Advertisement
I got my tattoo, which is a picture of the Iron Man symbol with a lei around it, after finishing the Iron Man World Championships Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii, in 2004. (The tattoo is on the back of Obrecht's ankle.) I had raced shorter triathlons for six years prior to going long-distance. The Iron Man distance includes a 2.4-mile ocean swim followed by a 112-mile bike ride (the wind gusts were up to 50 mph the day I raced). After the brutal bike ride, I ran the 26.2-mile marathon to finish the race.
My husband and one of my daughters were there that day. My other daughter was on the phone from the mainland from the moment I finished the race. She had been following it live online.
It's interesting that all of the racers in Hawaii have to qualify to participate. I did so by winning my age group in Iron Man Malaysia in February 2004.
