Soroco's Wilson earns honorable mention

Volleyball coaches from District 5 in Class 2A selected their All-District honorees after the district tournament in Oak Creek in late October.

Soroco's Amanda Wilson earned All-District Honorable Mention honors. Soroco coach Betsy Photos said her team was at a disadvantage in the selection process because each team's number of All-District slots were determined by team records - the Rams' winless district record kept them from qualifying players for first-team honors.

Photos acknowledged Wilson's versatility; she led the Rams in both digs and kills for the season.

"She's not extremely tall, but it goes to show the heart she has," Photos said.

Photos also noted the junior's skill at the net. She finished second on the team in blocks behind Emily Strait.

Sarajane Rossi and Kelsey Samuelson also were honored at Soroco's awards ceremony Tuesday. Rossi led the team in aces, and Samuelson led the team in assists.

Hayden's All-District selections will not be announced until after its fall sports banquet Nov. 29.

— In any other season, a selection to the Western Slope League's All-League volleyball team would be considered a high honor. But this year, the significance of a selection is magnified because of the astounding number of talented players in the league, Steamboat Springs volleyball coach Wendy Hall said.

The league's coaches determined the 2006 All-League first team during an Oct. 23 meeting, and among those selected were Steamboat's Shannon King and Katy Gary. Hall announced the selections Wednesday night at the team's awards banquet.

"It was a very difficult year because of the strength of Battle Mountain and Palisade," Hall said.

With a stacked roster of four NCAA Division I-bound athletes, Battle Mountain cruised to a 25-1 overall record and swept the 4A state volleyball tournament. Battle Mountain defeated Mountain View on Saturday - without losing a single game - to take the state title. Palisade's only league loss of the year was to Battle Mountain.

All six Battle Mountain starters were named to the 12-person All-League first team. Two Palisade players were named to the team.

Hall said King, senior, was deserving of the honor. She was the Sailors' setter and co-captain.

"She rose to the occasion on and off the court as a leader," Hall said about King.

Hall also raved about Gary's athletic ability as a "very dynamic hitter." The junior outside hitter led her team in kills and hitting percentage.

The Sailors' postseason run ended at the hands of the Battle Mountain Huskies at the district tournament, but Hall said Wednesday's banquet provided a positive end to the season. The team watched a video highlighting its best wins, including a comeback tie-breaker win over Delta on Sept. 23 and an emotional win over Moffat County on Oct. 17.
