Veterans Day is Saturday, but the fifth-graders at Soda Creek celebrated the holiday early with an hour-long tribute to Routt County veterans Wednesday. Nearly a month after Oak Creek Mayor Kathy "Cargo" Rodeman resigned her position, the town still is accepting letters from residents interested in filling the vacancy. Steamboat's Squirt B Skaters hosted The Summit Lightning on Saturday morning. Steamboat was able to hold off the Lightning and post a 3-1 victory in its first game of the season.
Winter sports ready to go
Saturday kicks off the scholastic winter sports season, marking the first day practices can officially begin for sports sanctioned under the Colorado High School Activities Association. The Soroco boys and girls basketball teams will kick off their seasons with practices beginning just after midnight á la Midnight Madness in college basketball. Most other area teams will begin practice this weekend or early next week. Even the ski teams, whose seasons are the only winter sports not bound to the start date because of weather considerations, plan to declare Monday the official beginning of practices.
