Longtime Steamboat Springs resident Mary Ellen Cunningham passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home May 21, 2006. She was 91.
Mary Ellen was born Jan. 13, 1915, in Topeka, Kan., to Olive F. (Sloan) Doyle and Harry Doyle. She was the third child of four.
She graduated from Topeka High School in 1932. The caption under her yearbook says she was "always one step ahead of Lady Fashion."
After working as a secretary, she married John L. Cunningham Jr. on Feb. 15, 1940.
Mary Ellen and John settled in Brownsville, Texas, where their son, Richard, was born. They moved to New Hyde Park, Long Island, N.Y., in 1947, and then to San Mateo, Calif., where their daughter, Kathleen, was born.
Mary Ellen, a homemaker, enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading and listening to the San Francisco Giants' baseball games on the radio.
She moved to Steamboat Springs to live with her daughter and son-in-law in November of 1990 after the death of her husband.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Guler and her husband, Peter, of Steamboat; her son, Richard Cunningham; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.
No services were held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to LIFT-UP of Routt County.
