15 Sailors named All-League

Steamboat senior Kelly Labor named Player of the Year

— Fifteen Steamboat Springs athletes were recognized by their respective leagues during the spring sports season.

Seniors Ann Barney, Casey Garth and Kelly Labor were named first team All-League by Western Slope League girls soccer coaches, and Labor received the league's Player of the Year honor for the third straight season.

The Steamboat Springs girls soccer team won its fourth-straight league championship this spring.

Senior Kirsten Ryan and junior Betty Sasak, also girls soccer players, were named honorable mention All-League.

Senior baseball player Jack Serhant was voted to the first team All-League for his individual accomplishments this season. He hit .361 and made just two errors in the outfield during the season.

"His leadership and good solid play offensively, defensively and pitching was what got him the all-league vote," Sailors coach Dave Roy said.

Teammate Elliot Girard, a sophomore, was named honorable mention All-League. Girard led the Sailors' in nearly every offensive category, hitting .429 with 12 RBIs this season.

Serhant and Girard will play in the league's All-Star Baseball Classic at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Deerfield Park Complex in Rifle.

The Steamboat players will join other all-league players from Palisade, Glenwood Springs and Eagle Valley to face an all-league team from Rifle and Moffat County.

Hayden's Bryan Richards, who plays baseball with the Bulldogs, will be on the other All-League team.

"It's a nine-inning game, so they all get a chance to play a lot. It's a great honor," Roy said.

Steamboat senior Jake Flax played in the All-State boys lacrosse game on May 24 at Regis High School.

Jake Flax, Neal Ficker and Vince Grippa were named to the Foothills League's second team by the coaches.

Sailors Andy Flax, Leo Chea, Joey Melius and Travis Mouffe were honorable mention All-League selections.

Steamboat Springs boys lacrosse coach Bob Hiester was named the league's Coach of the Year as well, which he said was an honor because his peers voted on it.

Steamboat Springs girls lacrosse player Maria Heilner, a junior, was named honorable mention All-League by the Metro League coaches.
