From shops to destinations

Seminar teaches how businesses can attract tourists

— Business owners are coming to Steamboat Springs from across Colorado and Wyoming with the hopes of making their shops a destination for tourists.

Main Street Steamboat Spr--ings is hosting a seminar Wed--nesday during which national marketing guru Jon Schall--ert will present his business improvement seminar, "Improv--ing Sales and Profits by Becoming a Dest--ination Business."

By becoming a consumer destination, business owners are trying to get people to travel specifically to their stores, said Tracy Barnett, Main Street Steamboat's project manager.

About 90 people have signed up for the seminar. About 60 percent of the people are local business owners and government officials, Barnett said. The town of Hayden will have eight people attending the seminar, with hopes of learning techniques to draw more people to the town.

"It might help us to maybe get the businesses organized and maybe get a downtown association," Hayden Economic Devel--opment member Don Johnson said.

Getting fresh ideas is important in Hayden as the town's chamber association restructures itself and identifies goals.

"We're trying to take care of the businesses we've got before we bring new ones in," Johnson said.

The seminar will take place in the morning, and a roundtable discussion will take place in the afternoon. Schallert also will meet with Main Street Steamboat board members.

Barnett said the seminar might provide some motivation for business owners to break out of a routine and try some new things.

"(They might) find something that will mean more than just opening their doors and selling stuff," she said.
