Meeker late-inning rally overwhelms Steamboat players

— A hot start wasn't enough for the Steamboat Springs High School baseball team as it lost to Meeker on Thursday.

The Cow--boys rallied in the late innings to defeat the Sailors, 11-7, in Meeker.

The seven-inning game took more than two hours to complete, so the junior varsity teams played only a half-inning before the game was called because of darkness.

"We scored early, but the bats kind of fell silent in the middle of the game," Steamboat coach Dave Roy said. "They take their baseball seriously. It was fun to go over there and play them."

Meeker did most of its damage with one swing of the bat in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs on a grand slam. Steamboat watched its 6-3 lead vanish.

"We had some good performances by individuals," Roy said. "We just came up a little short."

Elliot Girard went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a double. Brian Aragon was 2-for-4 with a double. Alex Wood drove in two runs and went 1-for-4. Nick Grant was 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Jack Serhant started the game and pitched one strong inning before Roy pulled Serhant in preparation for today's doubleheader against Delta. Zack Savage came on in relief against Meeker.

Steamboat hosts Delta in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. today at Craig Middle School.
