Officials talk transportation
City, county leaders discuss bus service
Monday, March 27, 2006
Steamboat Springs County Commissioner Nancy Stahoviak thinks Steamboat II should be in the city of Steamboat Springs bus route.
"There are a lot of people who live out there," Stahoviak said Monday during a joint meeting of the county commissioners and City Council.
A review of regional transportation services was among the topics at the meeting.
George Krawzoff, the city's transit and transportation director, told officials that the new regional buses have increased ridership numbers. Each of the three buses cost $430,000. Eighty percent of that money came from federal grants, and the rest came from the city.
When service to South Routt County came up, Stahoviak said the county had tried providing service there before. Some people said they were displeased because the bus didn't run enough times there each day, she said.
Stahoviak said officials should have more discussion about service to the area. Buses open up parking for people's cars, she said, which makes transit more popular.
Krawzoff agreed. Even people in who don't live on the bus route but live in Steamboat appreciate having enough parking around town. Buses provide that, he said. The regional buses, he said, prevent more than 50 cars from parking downtown each day.
Krawzoff also said it is difficult to advertise bus service because some buses are full. Officials do not want to promote the use of those services and create crowd issues.
