Series explores Irish films
Thursday, March 23, 2006
In honor of St. Patrick's Day, the Steamboat Springs Arts Council is showing "The Commitments," a movie set in Dublin, Ireland.
The film was chosen by former movie producer and Steamboat resident Dori Weiss because "Alan Parker is just one of my favorite directors," she said. "Among film people, he is considered an extraordinary director although he may not have the acclaim of some of the better-known directors."

The film was released in 1991 and follows Jimmy Rabbitte, who forms the band The Commitments, which brings soul music to the people of Dublin.
Those who attend today's showing are encouraged to stay after the film for a guided discussion led by Weiss.
The conversation usually addresses how the film technique supports the themes explored in the movie.
This is the last chance to attend a Friday Free Film Series program until the fall. Beer and wine will be available.
