Steamboat Springs A Steamboat Springs dentist will offer free dental care next month to children younger than 18 who don't have insurance.
Dr. Jeff Piaskowy, known as "Dr. Pi," of AvantGarde Dental is taking appointments for the day of free care, which will be April 29.
Piaskowy is a participant in a statewide program called Delta Dental's Smile-a-bration, which is sponsored by Delta Dental Plan of Colorado, Perfect Teeth and Kaiser Permanente.
Since Smile-a-bration started in 2003, 400 dentists have provided free dental care to 8,000 children statewide. This will be Piaskowy's third year in the program. He enjoys giving dental care to children who need it.
"I do like the ability to see so many patients and do care without having to worry about payment," he said. "It's a fun day."
Piaskowy plans to continue participating in the program.
"I feel like we'll always do it," he said.
On April 29, Piaskowy will do cleanings and more complicated procedures.
"I pretty much do anything that comes in the door," he said.
Piaskowy said he would like to see other local dentists participate in the program. He said dentists do not have to be Delta Dental providers to take part.
"Anyone that is in our field should, one day a year, give back to the community so that the children who are underserved do get some care," Piaskowy said.
