Chix give back to their fans

Snacks offered at tonight's game

— The Steamboat Chix with Stix women's hockey team ventured out of league play last weekend, dropping games to A Division opponents Breckenridge and Vail during the weekend.

The Chix play in the B1 Division, which is one notch below the A Division. Both games were on the road.

Steamboat lost to Vail, 8-7, on Sunday. With a depleted roster, the Chix turned to the Steamboat Storm, another local women's hockey team, to fill out its bench. Storm players Diane Anderson, Susie Leeson, Marie Winter and goalie Angie Hess suited up for the Chix.

The teams wasted little time scoring. Vail notched four first-period goals, and Steamboat scored twice. Holly Curtiss scored the Chix's first goal on an assist from Maggie Adams. Leeson scored the second goal on an assist from Riley Polumbus.

Steamboat scored four more goals in the second to pull ahead, 6-5. Polumbus teamed up with Lee Cox on a power play goal 6:30 into the period. Winter scored two minutes later. Steamboat added two goals in the closing 40 seconds of the second to take the lead. Julia Wallace and Anderson notched those goals.

Vail retook the lead after scoring two goals early in the third period. Curtiss tied the game on her shot off a face-off in the offensive zone. The goal sent the game into overtime. Vail scored 13 seconds into the sudden-death overtime for the win.

The Chix's game against Breckenridge on Saturday wasn't as close. Steamboat played with nine players and turned to Storm member Jodi Lightfoot for help.

The Blizzard scored two goals 2:30 into the game, but the Chix pulled to within one goal five minutes later on Heidi Chapman's score. Cox was given the assist. Steamboat's defense held Breck--enridge to one second-period goal, but the Blizzard added three in the third for the easy win.

Steamboat is home this weekend with an 8:45 p.m. game today against the Denver Synergy at Howelsen Ice Arena. Tonight's game is fan appreciation/sponsor night, so snacks will be provided before the puck drops. The Chix also play the Synergy at 9 a.m. Sunday.
