J3 skier wins Junior Olympics event

Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's J3 athletes don't tend to excel in Alpine racing speed events, but the team has shrugged this reputation because of the results from Wednesday's J3 Junior Olympics in Vail.
Competing in the downhill and super G races, Winter Sports Club athletes turned in three podium finishes Wednesday.
The J3 skiers are 13 and 14 years old.
Ski Club Vail dominated the downhill races Tuesday, but Steamboat racers skied skillfully in Wednesday's super G, with Max Marno winning the boys competition in 56.52 seconds.
Teammate Ryan McConnell was third in 56.96. McConnell placed fourth behind a trio of Vail skiers in Tuesday's downhill.
Anna Marno took third in the girls super G on Wednesday with a time of 59.99.
"Steamboat's strength is not downhill, for lack of experience, but our athletes skied very well in the event," coach Dusty Matheson said. "All of the Steamboat athletes moved up from their start position in both the downhill and super G. Now that the speed portion of the event is over, we are focusing on the (technical) events, where Steamboat is much stronger."
The largest leap in the boys downhill was Steamboat's Will Hoeschler, who finished 19th after starting 65th.
"It seems that all the hard work these athletes have put into their season is paying off, and everyone is skiing at the top of their game when it counts the most," Matheson said.
