Jam band on a new track

Some bands are fortunate enough to get to a time in their careers when they can focus only on their music.

Moses Guest is at just such a place, and its members couldn't be more excited.

"This trip is the end of something old and the beginning of something new," said Graham Guest, the band's songwriter, vocalist and guitarist. "(It's) the end of touring like a bunch of crazy guys, and now (it's) touring like responsible adults."

Guest said the Houston-based "Southern-fried country rock" band is at a turning point in its musical career.

Its members have worked "through the conflict of their demons, and this marks the end of an era," Guest said. There will be less partying and more focus on the music they create.

Moses Guest has been together for 10 years, and the band has five CDs and one DVD under its belt. At the end of their current tour, band members will record a sixth album.

But their immediate focus is the live shows on their tour. Moses Guest's concert style depends entirely on the time and place of the show, Guest said. At the band's Colorado shows, audiences should expect about a third of the show to be improvisation. But Guest emphasized that the band doesn't "want to overdo the jam."

The band's slogan is to "get to the point in the jam, and once it's made, we're pretty quick to open the hatch and get back into the structure of the tune," Guest said. "And sometimes you don't make the point."

The sound of the band's music makes listeners want to close their eyes and dance. Guest said the band's shows have a fraternal feel to them. Sometimes, however, "the kinship is of much alcohol," he said.

Colorado is a favorite place for the band to perform, and Steamboat is a favored destination.

"We're obviously from Texas, but we are not the typical Texans," he said. "We like the homely, cowboy atmosphere -- the chill, semi-Southern, laid back attitude in Steamboat."

Guest said the band's Achilles' heel is that it has not toured enough during the past year. But tonight and Saturday, Moses Guest will be far from Houston and doing exactly what they want to do --ust playing music.

"We're as happy as we can be to come back to Steamboat," Guest said.
