Hayden grapplers take first

The Hayden middle school wrestling team placed first, and 16 Tigers were in the top four during the Northwest Invitational Tournament during the weekend.

Hayden is halfway through its season, but there is no letting up in the practice room.

"What really allows us to do that is they are having a good time and believe in what they are doing," coach Dallas Robinson said. "I'm very impressed with their work ethic."

Six Hayden wrestlers won the tournament hosted by Hayden on Saturday. They were Cory Terry (75 pounds), Chad Terry (80), Ben Williams (105), Alex Roulett (125), Jake Walker (135) and Halen Raymond (heavyweight).

"Halen pinned all of his competitors in less than 30 seconds," Robinson said.

Raymond weighs nearly 300 pounds, so he is usually much bigger than his competition.

"He's solid," Robinson said. "He's really a leader in the room. He gets everybody pumped up."

The Terry brothers are both undefeated this season, and Walker has progressed well between his seventh- and eighth-grade seasons, Robinson said.

"Jake's turned it up a notch," he said. "He's always done well and been a great point-getter, but he's come out with a new vigor."

Hunter Johnston (70), Nick Williams (90), Koleman Williams (110), Treyben Letlow (120), Chris Miner (145) and Rene Valdez (155) placed second at the Northwest Invitational.

Kolton Miller (130) was third, and Scott Armbruster (85), Dakota Zehner (95), Damien Corbin (100) and Chris Skof (115) were fourth at the tournament.

Hayden is back in action at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Soroco tournament in Oak Creek.
