Flying solo: REL-I brings reggae to the mountains

REL-I, aka Matthew Relis, is a very busy man.

The California-based world music/reggae artist writes, records, produces, performs and promotes his own music. On Saturday, he'll be at Old Town Pub to give local listeners a performance of his powerful vocals and his equally powerful message.

"You will hear me talk about giving thanks and praise for life and pointing out injustices in the world. It's a reality check," Relis said.

His latest album, "Self Reliance," is the self-professed process in which he achieves his musical goals. Being independent is what has gotten him to where he is now.

Relis recently shot his first music video, which will be shown in the Caribbean, and has opened for acts such as Eek-A-Mouse, Burning Spear, Culture and Buju Banton, his favorite artist to perform with.

Relis cleverly combines traditional roots reggae, dancehall and dub. "Anyone who likes folk, blues and reggae would enjoy the show. Not many people in this area are doing this at an acoustic level," he said.

And not many people are as passionate as Relis when it comes to promoting world change through his music.
