Chix handle Clash

Women's hockey team wins twice against Denver

The new year has been kind to the Steamboat Chix with Stix women's hockey team.

Steamboat defeated the Denver Clash twice during the weekend at Howelsen Ice Arena and beat Fort Collins twice at the EPIC Center in early February.

In between, the Chix lost to the University of Denver, one of the best Colorado teams in the 'A' division. The Chix play in the Women's Association of Colorado Hockey league's 'B1' division.

The Chix defeated the Clash, 5-2, on Saturday and beat them again, 4-1, on Sunday.

Although neither final score was close, Steamboat trailed Denver by two goals at the end of the first period and one goal at the end of the second period Saturday. The Chix scored four goals in the third period and held the Clash scoreless.

Goalie Nicki Knoebel turned away 26 shots Saturday and stopped 24 shots Sunday.

The second game Sunday wasn't close. Steamboat got a first-period goal off the stick of Sue Heineke and an assist from Diane Dwire. The Chix added two goals in the second period from Dwire and Jen Travis. Heidi Chapman-Hoy and Lynne Bosley assisted on Dwire's goal.

Holly Curtiss scored the final goal on Dwire's assist.

The University of Denver, boasting a young, physical team, interrupted Steamboat's winning streak with two wins Feb. 18 and Feb. 19. DU won, 7-2, in the first game, but narrowly defeated Steamboat, 2-1, in the second.

Steamboat's lone score in the Feb. 19 game came with 12 minutes, 27 seconds left in the first period on Travis' short-handed goal.

Offense was key in Steam--boat's two wins against Fort Collins in early February. The Chix defeated the Flames on the road, 4-3 and 9-2.

Lisa Owen scored the game-winner Feb. 4 with seven minutes remaining in the third period. Owen said Steamboat had a faceoff in its offensive zone. Heineke, a center, drew the puck back to Chapman-Hoy, who passed it off to Owen at the top of the circle. Owen shot over the goalie's left shoulder for the win.

Steamboat held a slim 2-1 lad at the end of the first period Feb. 5 thanks to goals from Dwire and Heineke. But the Chix scored five times in the second period to build a commanding lead.

Dwire, Owen, Lee Cox, Cathy Wiedemer and Riley Polumbus of the Chix traveled to Las Vegas at the end of January to team up with players from the Left Hand Brewsers for a women's tournament. The team -- the Brewser Chix -- took second in its division behind the San Jose Lady Sharks.

The Brewser Chix also defeated women's teams from Phoenix and San Diego.
