Club sends 19 to Jr. Olympics
Wednesday, March 1, 2006
Steamboat Springs Nineteen ski racers with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club qualified for the J4 Junior Olympics in March in Winter Park.
It is the largest group of 11- and 12-year-olds to qualify for the Junior Olympics in the past five years.
"It's a great group," coach Scott Wither said. "There's very good sportsmanship among them. They are very competitive and get along great."
Only 40 athletes from the Rocky Mountain Division qualify for the Junior Olympics, so nearly half are Steamboat skiers.
"They start in J5, but this is the first year they have to qualify for an event and set goals about making it to (the Junior Olympics)," Wither said.
The 19 skiers are: Connor Bernard, Greta Byrne, Ciar Colgan, Julia Cooper, Cassady Daley, Dane Dixson, Rachel Dobell, Jeffrey Gay, Katie Hostetler, Corinne Landy, Tommy Lyon, Natalie Pearl, Ali Pougiales, Murphy Roberts, Matthew Sobeck, Lily Wasser, Gracy Whelihan, Sarah White and Hannah Young.
John Walters helps coach the J4 crew.
The Rocky Mountain Division brings together skiers from Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. The J4 Junior Olympics are from March 22 to 25.
