Steamboat ruggers rout Breckenridge

— It took three games, but the Steamboat Springs Rugby Club appears to have found its form.

Steamboat defeated Brecken--ridge, 73-3, on Saturday at Whist--ler Field, getting its first win of the season and its first in league play.

"We actually clicked it into another gear for the first time all year," captain Michael Hurley said.

Steamboat's lopsided win against Breckenridge hopefully sent a statement to the remaining league teams that Steamboat has a competitive team this season, Hurley added.

Breckenridge lost to Vail by two tries, and Vail beat Steamboat by two points.

Steamboat's whipping of Breckenridge could be a precursor for its rematch with Vail later this summer.

"We should have won the first time," Hurley said about Steamboat's 27-25 loss to Vail to open the 2006 season.

Hurley scored four tries for Steamboat on Saturday, and Jimmy Gardner added three tries. Several other Steamboat players touched the rugby ball down for a try.

Breckenridge had little success advancing the ball against Steamboat's defense.

Steamboat's next tournament is the Cowpie Classic from July 7 to 9 at the Ski Town Fields.
