Steamboat Springs Rising Steamboat Springs tennis star Jamey Swiggart won the Colorado State Junior Tennis Open last weekend at the Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs.
The 11-year-old Swiggart, ranked No. 1 in the state for the boy's 12-and-under division, defeated Juan Kang and Sean Moore to get to the semifinals of the prestigious tournament.
Swiggart moved past Jakob Hedderig, 7-6 (7-0), 7-5, to earn an invitation to the finals, in which he went head to head with No. 2 seed Parker Curry for the crown. Swiggart won the match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, to claim the title and strengthen his position in the state rankings.
Swiggart hoped to pick up a little more experience by playing in the 14-and-under division, as well.
Swiggart lost in the first round to Alex Naegy but rebounded with wins against Robert Bui (6-2, 6-3), Mikel Kosich (6-1, 6-1) and Joe Kelliher (6-0, 6-1) to win the consolation bracket and finish third in that division.
Swiggart was headed to Tennessee this week to take part in the USTA National 12-and-under Clay Court Championships, which will be held in Chattanooga. Match play begins Saturday.
