Karen Jo Dooley: Nothing to fear

It saddens me greatly to see the people of this valley that I love so much being so hateful to and paranoid of the Rainbow Family.

The elders of this family are gentle souls who wish no harm on anyone. The youths are just that. They are young people on a spiritual quest. Will some of them party and get rowdy? Yes. Will they rip through our forest leaving trash and destruction? No.

The family has been doing this for years, and they respect the earth. The following is copied directly from the top of their "unofficial" Web site:

"When the earth is ravaged and the animals are dying, a new tribe of people shall come unto the earth from many colors, classes, creeds, and who by their actions and deeds shall make the earth green again. They will be known as the warriors of the Rainbow."

Sounds pretty scary, doesn't it? Routt County law enforcement and our Forest Service representatives need to stop inciting and stop acting so hostile to these people. They might even consider talking to some family members to ease their fear of this spiritual gathering.

Treat them with respect and they will do the same. Because when do the good people of the Yampa Valley judge any group of visitors with hatred and contempt? I strongly urge everyone to open his or her minds and hearts because the Rainbow Family is not a threat, and like every other special event in our area, this too shall pass.
