Longmont resident Dr. T. Doug Leonardson, DDS, died June 12, 2006, from injuries sustained in a single-engine plane crash near Kansas City, Mo. He was 35. He had a business and many clients in Steamboat Springs.
He was born Sept. 7, 1970, in Fillmore, Utah, to Arliss and Donna (Riding) Leonardson. Doug grew up and attended schools in several cities between Utah, Idaho, and Montana before graduating from C.M. Russell High School in Great Falls, Mont., in 1988.
In October 1989, he married Melissa S. Ray in Great Falls, Mont.
Doug went on to receive a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from Montana State University in Bozeman. He worked as a mechanical engineer for two years in Corpus Christi, Texas, before entering the dental school at the University of Texas Health and Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. After a two-year residency in Texas, Dr. Leonardson received his endodonist certificate. He moved to Superior in 2001, where he started an endodontist practice in Westminster. He also had a satellite location in Steamboat.
The Leonardsons moved to Longmont in 2002.
Doug was a member of the Colorado Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the American Association of Endodontists.
He loved spending time with his family, and they all enjoyed many of the same hobbies, including wakeboarding, snowboarding and mountain biking. He taught them to enjoy life and to never be afraid to try new things. His most recent interests were road cycling and flying.
If he could say anything to those in his life, it would be, "Live Strong."
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served mostly in the youth and scouting programs.
He is survived by his wife, Melissa; a son, Garrett Leonardson; two daughters, Hailey and Courtney Leonardson; his father Arliss W. Leonardson of Vaughn, Mont.; mother and stepfather, Donna and Rex Waldron of Malad, Idaho; three brothers, Charles Leonardson of Woodland, Wash., Russell Leonardson of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Matthew Leonardson of Pocatello, Idaho; six sisters, Diana Kirkham of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Jackie Kennedy of Mission Viejo, Calif., Alane McMurtrey of Superior, Andrea Atkinson of Preston, Idaho, Kathryn and Karen Leonardson of Vaughn, Mont; and many other family members and friends.
Funeral services were held June 21, 2006, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Longmont with Bishop David Richards officiating. Interment followed at Foothills Gardens of Memory.
Memorial donations may be made to the Perpetual Education Fund through The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Dentistry for the Handicap.
