Charges pending in motorcycle crash

Officers said charges are pending against a 21-year-old woman who was driving a motorcycle that crashed into a car Saturday near Routt County Road 129 south of the Mad Creek trailhead.

Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Jim Copley said Wednesday that the woman, whose name was not available, could face charges including careless driving and reckless driving. Alcohol and driver inexperience are contributing factors in the accident, Copley said.

Copley said the woman and her passenger, Brian Dennis of Steamboat Springs, were thrown from the motorcycle when it struck the front side of a Chevrolet Cavalier traveling north on C.R. 129.

The driver of the Chevrolet Cavalier, Victor Wimmer of Craig, sustained minor injuries in the accident, Copley said.

Dennis and the driver of the motorcycle sustained severe head and skeletal injuries in the accident. Neither was wearing a helmet, Copley said.

Police said the woman was flown to a Denver hospital, and Dennis was sent to Yampa Valley Medical Center. Dennis had been treated and released as of Wednesday evening, according to a nurse at YVMC.

Copley said he is awaiting a final accident report from the Granby trooper who is investigating the accident.

Cut cable repaired; cause for damage is unknown

A fiber optic cable that was cut Tuesday evening was repaired by 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, but Qwest officials said the cause of the damage remains unknown.

The cable was cut about 10 miles north of Dillon, Qwest spokesman Michael Dunne said Wednesday. It took repair crews several hours to find the damaged section of cable. Crews spliced the line, and service was restored at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Phone and Internet service throughout Northwest Colorado were affected by the cut cable. Affected areas included Granby, Kremmling, Steamboat Springs, Oak Creek and Craig. 911 service was not disrupted.
