Hayden residents have Internet options

— Another company has answered the calls of Hayden residents looking for more options for accessing the World Wide Web.

In April, Resort Broadband, a locally owned and operated company based in Steamboat Springs, began offering its fixed wireless service. To access the service, customers affix a 1-foot-tall antenna to the outside of their home. The antenna must have a clear line of sight to the top of the Cog.

Expanding the service to Hayden is in response to demand, Resort Broadband Vice President Evan Biagi said.

"We saw a need out there," Biagi said. "We're starting to differentiate our service from the resort industry."

Resort Broadband has only one other Internet competitor in Hayden. NC Telecom offers similar wireless technology for Internet service. Cable TV provider Bresnan Communication is in the process of burying cable lines to provide a combination Internet, cable television and telephone service. Bresnan expects the service to be available by mid-July.

Resort Broadband uses similar Internet technology in Stagecoach, and Biagi said it provides reliable service.

"There are no issues with weather," Biagi said. "It's equipment designed to do extremely well."

Resort Broadband plans to focus on providing service to businesses as well as homes.

"For certain situations, I think we have a better solution," Biagi said, referring to business applications.

What sets Resort Broadband apart from other providers is its customer service, Biagi said.

"Instead of saying, 'That's not our problem,' I can say, 'Yeah, we can help with that,'" Biagi said.

In addition to being an Internet provider, the company also offers computer repair and can perform diagnostic tests.

"Service is a strong part of our service," Biagi said. "We can help beyond the Internet connection."

Through the end of July, Resort Broadband is offering free installation -- a savings of $100. The cost of the antenna is $249, and it comes with a $40 mail-in rebate. The cost of the basic service is $29 a month. A faster 1.5-megabyte-per-second connection costs $39 a month.
