— A new chapter in Soroco athletics began Thursday night, as the South Routt School Board approved the contract of the man who will replace longtime physical education teacher and coach Gary Heide.

South Routt School District business manager Dina Murray said the new teacher, David Bruner, has taught physical education for five years at high schools in New Mexico and Oklahoma. In Boise City, Okla., Bruner coached football and track -- the same sports Heide coached at Soroco High School for a combined eight years. Murray said Bruner will teach physical education at Soroco and likely will fill Heide's void as football and track coach.

"Those conversations have begun to take place," Murray said.

The School Board also filled a new position Thursday night, with the hiring of Maurice Glenn as the district's director of operations and maintenance. A resident of the Gore Pass area who worked at Alaska schools from 1994 to 2004, Glenn will oversee custodial staff and maintenance at the three district schools. Superintendent Kelly Reed said Glenn plans to move to Yampa to be closer to the school.
