Fall sports programs ready for new season


— Steamboat Springs High School's fall sports teams will start their practices next month in preparation for their approaching seasons.

The boys golf team will start practice with a meeting at 2 p.m. Aug. 7 at Haymaker Golf Course. At 2 p.m. Aug. 8, the team will start its qualifying tournament at the Steamboat Golf Club. The tournament will continue at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at Haymaker.

Practices will begin Aug. 14 for boys soccer, football, cross country, boys tennis, softball, and volleyball.

The Sailors soccer team will have a meeting and start fitness testing at 9 a.m. Aug. 14 at the high school. Summit High School will be the team's first opponent, an away game, on Aug. 31. The game follows scrimmages Aug. 26.

Steamboat football will start practice at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 14 at the high school. The first varsity game is Aug. 26 at home against Kent Denver.

The cross country squad will start training Aug. 14, but a time is not yet for certain. The squad expects to begin competition Sept. 9.

Sailors tennis players will start practice at 8 a.m. Aug. 14 at the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs. The team's first match is Aug. 18.

The softball team is scheduled to meet from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 14 at the middle school diamond. The team's first game is Aug. 26 at the middle school.

The volleyball team will assemble in the morning at the high school. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors will meet from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and from 2 to 4 p.m. Freshmen will go from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 3 to 5 p.m. The team is scheduled to play Middle Park on Sept. 12. The home opener for the Sailors is against Rifle on Sept. 16.

All players for every sport must have a physical and the proper paperwork before they will be allowed to practice. Paperwork should be turned in to Kate Parke, the athletics director secretary at the high school.
