Arts council to throw wine-tasting party

Steamboat Springs — If you haven't already experienced canned champagne, Wednesday night is your opportunity to crack open a new trend.

Steamboat Springs Arts Council's Cheap and Cheesy Wine Party will offer wine tasting, cheesy hors d'oeuvres and desserts, live entertainment by We're Not Clowns and Dave Willis, and a chance to try Francis Coppola's canned champagne.

"It's hilarious. It has a little straw attached to the outside of it like a Capri-Sun, where you can never get the straw to go in," said Jennifer Jones, director of events and marketing for the Arts Council. "We will have screw-top wines and wine reps there, as well. It's just a party celebrating the finer things on the cheaper side."

The Arts Council will continue to host its traditional private wine dinners, but the Cheap and Cheesy Wine Party is open to everyone. It is an opportunity to sample some less expensive and more reasonable wines than those that will be offered during the third annual Steamboat Wine Festival.

"We feel that wine shouldn't just be for the wealthy," said Katy Kriz, vice president of the Arts Council's board of directors. "There are a lot of good ,inexpensive wines, you just have to know what they are."

The party is a fundraiser for the Arts Council and a prelude to upcoming events, including the fourth annual Beaux Arts Festival.

"It includes 10 days of art and cultural events downtown and on the mountain that celebrate the senses and the creative spirit," Jones said. "A lot will be going on that will show the strength of the arts and cultural community."
