Steamboat Springs A man who was thrown from and kicked by a horse Saturday on a trail off Seedhouse Road in North Routt County was listed in fair condition at Yampa Valley Medical Center on Tuesday.
Routt County Search and Rescue Incident Commander Jim Vail said 62-year-old Dr. Mike Ribaudo of Crested Butte was riding a horse with a group of friends at about 4 p.m. Saturday on the Coulton Creek Trail when the horse bucked Ribaudo off and then trampled him.
Ribaudo suffered injuries including a shattered collarbone and several broken ribs, which caused air to leak from Ribaudo's lungs, Vail said.
Ribaudo was bleeding from the mouth and was having difficulty breathing after the accident, Vail said.
Ribaudo's friends called North Routt emergency medical crews to the area.
Search and Rescue crews were able to drive to about a half-mile from where Ribaudo was located. They then used all-terrain vehicles to reach Ribaudo. Vail said Flight for Life was called to transport Ribaudo because of the severity of his injuries, but the helicopter was not available because it was tied up in Frisco with mechanical problems.
Instead, Ribaudo was transported by ambulance to Yampa Valley Medical Center.
