Steamboat Springs Yampa Valley Medical Center will host a blood drive Thursday. The drive is from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the YVMC conference rooms.
The Medical Center puts on about five blood drives per year with help from the Bonfils Blood Center. Bonfils routinely sends a professional to Steamboat to help conduct the blood drives. Through the Bonfils system, YVMC is able to maintain a fresh, clean supply of blood for its patients yearlong.
The blood that is donated in Steamboat will be sent to Denver where it will be processed. The blood can then be sent to where it is needed.
When YVMC needs blood, the Bonfils Blood Center in Denver will send it to Steamboat. The blood comes from a recent blood drive in Colorado. This rotation of donated blood allows less to be wasted, since the shelf life of blood is not long.
The Bonfils Blood Center supplies blood for all of Colorado and occasionally to surrounding states.
Between 150 and 200 donors are expected to take part in the drive. Donors must be 18 years old or have parent permission to give blood. Every blood type is accepted.
It is suggested that donors make an appointment before the blood drive. Those wishing to make an appointment should call Tosia Sauter at 870-1495. Walk-ins are welcome but should expect a waiting period.
Jake Flax is conducting a Colorado Press Association internship at the Steamboat Pilot & Today. He will be a freshman at Colorado State University in the fall. He can be reached at 871-4209.
