Part-time Steamboat Springs resident Don A. Erwin died July 18, 2006, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kan. He was 78.
Don was born Oct. 30, 1927, to Ralph and Cora Mae (Steenis) Erwin in Garden City, Kan. He grew up in Deerfield, Kan., and attended Deerfield schools. He graduated from Deerfield High School.
Don served in the Army during the Korean War from October 1950 to September 1952.
After his service, Don returned to Deerfield. He married Patt Harrington on Oct. 8, 1945, in Raton, N.M. They moved to Garden City in 1958 and have lived there since.
Don worked as an operation supervisor for Sunflower Electric for 31 years. He retired in 1990.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, boating, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
After his retirement, Don and Patt also enjoyed vacationing during the summer months in Steamboat Springs.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the First Christian Church, where he served as a lay minister.
Don is preceded in death by his parents; and foster parents, Glenn and Dolly Steward.
He is survived by his wife, Patt Erwin, of Garden City; sons, Jack Erwin of Texas City, Texas, and Rick and his wife, Bonnie Erwin, of Garden City; daughters, Sheryl (Sister Monica) Erwin of Virginia Dale, and Donne and her husband, Todd Thompson, of Steamboat Springs; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held July 21, 2006, at the First Christian Church with Pastor Bill Nowlan officiating. Burial took place at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by Garden City area veterans.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church or to the American Cancer Society, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St., Garden City, KS 67846.
