Alice Klauzer and Christine McKelvie: Get involved

As event sponsors of Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society fundraiser, we want to invite all who have survived cancer to the opening ceremonies and inspirational Survivors' Lap at 6 p.m. Aug. 4. The event will take place at the Steamboat Springs High School track. Survivors -- people and pets -- will be given free T-shirts, recognition and loving support.

Survivors, caregivers and families are also welcome at the Ceremony of Hope, which will take place at about 9 p.m. that night. By the light of luminaria bags placed around the track, we will join together to remember those who have been lost to cancer, support those who are fighting cancer and rejoice with those who have fought the disease and won.

Although new to Steamboat Springs, Relay For Life takes place in more than 4,200 communities in 12 countries. Numerous local teams have signed up for this unique overnight event. Each team has committed to having someone walking around the track at all times during the evening, night and morning of August 4 and 5, because cancer never sleeps.

Luminaria bags, purple HOPE bracelets and donation display cards may be purchased at Alpine Bank, Prudential Steamboat Realty, SportsMed at Yampa Valley Medical Center and Starbucks at Sundance at Fish Creek shopping center. These items also will be available at the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association Mixer at Ace at the Curve on Wednesday.

We encourage everyone who would like to remember or support a loved one who has had cancer to get involved with this event. We welcome your presence at the event, your donations or purchase of bracelets and luminaria bags, and your questions.
