Rick Garth: Project on schedule
Advertisement
On Monday night I was contacted by Mike Lawrence of the Steamboat Pilot & Today, who was seeking information regarding the progress of the new turf field at the high school.
I advised Lawrence that the project and funding are on schedule. Lawrence's desire to piecemeal other information together has led to some misleading facts being printed. Dave Hieronymus (designer of the project) estimated the total cost of the field to be $466,200, which was under the original estimate of $510,000.
Ed and June MacArthur of Native Excavating made a significant donation of earthwork that reduced the quoted bid for the project. Theses two tireless benefactors of our community, along with other excavating companies, are part of an in-kind donation that was secured as part of the private fundraising effort to complete the field.
While I applaud the Pilot & Today's desire to keep the public informed about the project, reporting without all the facts can cause concerns -- such as Mike Loomis' that the Education Fund Board gift might not be needed in its entirety. Some unanticipated costs have occurred, and an architect was retained to oversee design and completion of the project. These two items alone will take the cost of the project above the original estimate of $510,000. I would like to repeat what I told the interviewer from the Pilot & Today -- community donations and construction are both on schedule.
