Paxton resigns from Oak Creek Town Board

Bill Paxton resigned Friday from the Oak Creek Town Board.
Paxton said Thursday night's Town Board meeting was the impetus for his resignation. During the meeting, the Town Board agreed that two residents were not operating cottage businesses from their homes and thus were not violating city codes. Residents had complained about the homes, saying the yards are frequently filled with items including old cars, batteries and scrap metal.
Paxton was the only board member who disagreed with the rest of the board's position. He said he thought the board wasn't willing to enforce its own laws.
"I'm tired of people bellyaching and crying and getting their way," he said. "The town doesn't do things by the code. I'm finished."
Paxton was three months in to his seventh year as a trustee.
Oak Creek Mayor Kathy "Cargo" Rodeman said she was sad to see Paxton go.
"I have to respect his decision," she said. "He was a very good board member. He routinely came into the (Oak Creek) Town Hall in between meetings to see what was going on. He'll be missed."
The town will be accepting letters of interest from residents who want to fill Paxton's position until the town's next board meeting July 27, Rodeman said.
A replacement may be appointed then or at a later meeting, she said.
Paxton said he wishes his fellow Town Board members success.
"I can walk away with my head held high and let the rest of the board and the mayor do what they need to do," he said. "More power to them, I just hope they don't stumble and fall in."
