Routt County school administrators did not have to look far to find a new grant writer.
The superintendents of the Hayden, Steamboat and South Routt school districts hired Lane Malone, executive director of Partners in Routt County, for the grant writer position last week.
Malone will fill a void left by the resignation of former grant writer Sue Gariepy, who held the position for about a year before leaving last month to continue her education on the Front Range.
"I just feel (Malone) is an all-around quality candidate who meets all the criteria that was put forward," said Kelly Reed, superintendent of the South Routt School District.
Donna Howell, superintendent of Steamboat schools, praised Malone's previous grant writing experience and extensive knowledge of youth organizations in Routt County.
The city of Steamboat Springs' Education Fund Board pays for the grant writer's salary and benefits.
A recent study by the Steamboat Springs School District determined the average, or "market," salary for the grant writer position is slightly more than $50,000.
The study examined administrative salaries in 10 Colorado school districts, most of which were similar in size and demographics to Steamboat Springs.
The Routt County grant writer works with school administrators and staff in Steamboat, Hayden and South Routt to facilitate funding efforts for a variety of school projects and needs.
Gariepy, for example, recently received approval from the Routt County Board of Commissioners to apply for a state grant of more than $350,000 to help fund construction of a new South Routt Early Learning Center.
The state Department of Local Affairs is scheduled to consider the grant in the fall.
Malone leaves Partners after three years as executive director of the non-profit, youth mentoring organization.
In a letter sent Monday to friends and staff, Malone said that although she will leave Partners with "mixed measures of excitement and sadness," she looks forward to the new opportunity.
"In addition to the primary grant writing responsibilities, the job includes district and community outreach work and involvement with the Curriculum Team, all of which is a great fit with my professional background and interests," she wrote.
"The job will involve working with many people I already know and respect, doing work that will support youth throughout Routt County."
