A kennel that the owners say would be a "small, luxury boarding facility" for pets may be built south of Steamboat Springs.

Ron and Peggy Haas are proposing to build a kennel facility on an 18-acre parcel off of Colorado Highway 131, eight miles south of Steamboat Springs. The Routt County Board of Commissioners will review the Haases' application for a special-use permit this afternoon.

The kennel would be called the RKRanch Pet Resort. Dogs would be kept in suites. Each suite would have indoor heat, ventilation, a window, a bed and a dog door to a playroom. There would be music, TVs and a large room used for playtime during inclement weather and winter.

"This is a pet's home away from home," reads a summary of the Haases' presentation. They predict having about 12 "guests" at one time, though, according to the county, the permit would allow for 24.

The Routt County Planning Commission reviewed the application for the special-use permit and voted 4-2 to recommend its denial. Voting for denial were Jeff Fry, Jay Gallagher, Fred Nichols and Don Alperti. Commissioners said they were concerned about noise and landscaping, and that the proposal did not comply with a county resolution and the county's master plan. The two who voted to recommend that the project be approved were John Ayer and Terry Hunter.

The project received letters of support and concern.

The special-use permit is the last step in the planning process for the Haases. If the permit is approved, their next step would be working with the building department.
