Steamboat Springs The shortest race in the Steamboat Springs Running Series also may be the most difficult.
Well, depending on how serious a sprinter you are.
The annual Steamboat Sprint is at 9:30 a.m. today. The race covers 400 yards on Lincoln Avenue between Ninth Street and the Routt County Courthouse lawn.
Running series director John Chapman acknowledged that 400-yard sprints are a different kind of tough.
"They are such a hard-core anaerobic," he said.
The sprinting element keeps many regular running series participants away, but today's race counts in the final points standings.
Today's race also is open to those participants who have never competed in a running series race before.
While times are kept and prizes are awarded in each age division, the city of Steamboat Springs, which puts on the race, gives away other prizes.
"We are giving away tons of random prizes," city employee Kit Rice said. "People love it."
There are also people who show up for today's race dressed in patriotic attire just to have fun. Regardless, registration begins at 9 a.m. today and costs $4 per person.
Registration is in front of Lyon's Corner Drug and Soda Fountain.
The race is held immediately before the parade.
