Steamboat Springs resident Joseph Paul Martino died Jan. 10, 2006, at the Doak Walker Care Center after fighting cancer for a year. He was 42.
Joe grew up in Colorado Springs and attended Air Academy High School, followed by college at Colorado State University, from which he earned a bachelor's degree in engineering in 1985.
After graduation from college, he worked for seven years as a mechanical engineer for the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver until his passion for recreation and a better quality of life compelled him to move to Steamboat in October 1992. Shortly after moving to Steamboat, he met his future wife, Sarah, and they were married in 1996.
Joe worked as a mechanical and structural engineer for Engineering Designworks, as a plans examiner for the Routt County Building Department and as an engineer for SEAD Inc. until he started his business, Martino Engineering.
As a great lover of recreation, especially in the Yampa Valley, Joe was passionate about telemark skiing, skate skiing, singletrack bike riding, river trips and muzzle loading.
Joe is preceded in death by his father, and his brother Anthony Martino.
Joe is survived by his wife of nine years, Sarah Martino; his mother of Colorado Springs; sisters, Susan Baum of Longmont and Lisa Martino of Colorado Springs; brother Dan Martino of Colorado Springs; and Mike Martino of La Junta.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Steamboat Springs Nordic Council and sent to the Yampa Valley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 776090, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477.
