Greg Hughey: Keep snow on path

To the editor:

If we call our city Ski Town USA, why don't we make it easy for commuters to cross-country ski through our community as they do in parts of Europe? We have a very good Core Trail bicycle path that is plowed each and every time it snows. The trail is so wide that it requires two passes of the plow to grade the entire width of the path. Leaving 3 feet on one side of the path unplowed would allow traditional cross-country skiers to travel alongside the fewer pedestrians and bicyclists who use the path in the winter months.

The only maintenance required would be to pack a strip of snow 6 inches deep and 3 feet wide in the tunnels where snow does not fall. This simple use of an already existing resource would add another form of recreation within our community and reduce congested roadways by allowing people to ski to their destinations rather than drive. Build it, and they will ski.
