Woman killed in snowmobile accident

A snowmobiler was killed Tuesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 40 near Dumont Lake when she was hit by a semi-trailer as she tried to cross the highway.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Melissa Remner said emergency crews received a call at about 2:15 p.m. that a snowmobiler had been hit by a truck on Rabbit Ears Pass. Remner said the woman tried to cross from the highway's west side.

The victim's name and age were not released pending notification of her family. The woman was not a Routt County resident, Remner said.

Remner said the driver of the truck -- whose name was not released -- most likely did not see the woman because she entered the highway between two snowdrifts. Remner said the driver was on his way to Craig.

The man driving the truck was not speeding at the time of the accident, and he was not given a citation.

No one else was injured in the accident.

Remner said it is legal for snowmobiles to cross U.S. 40.
