Alice Keith Welles, 1926-2006

Former Steamboat Springs resident Alice Keith Welles died Feb. 19, 2006, in Greenwood Village. She was 80.
She was born Feb. 2, 1926, in Chicago to Keith and Anita (Dunn) Carpenter. She attended Lake Forest Country Day School and later attended Pine Manor Junior College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
She married Scott Welles on June 20, 1947, in Lake Forest, Ill. She and her family are longtime residents of Desbarats, Ontario, Canada.
Alice was a housewife.
She was a member of the Denver Botanical Gardens, the Sierra Club, The Nature Conservancy, Strings in the Mountains, the Denver Zoo, and the Morton Arboretum.
She enjoyed music, tennis, cross-country skiing, sailing, hiking and the great outdoors. She traveled extensively during her lifetime, visiting all of the continents.
A memorial service is at 4 p.m. March 1 at the Denver Botanic Gardens, 909 York St. in Denver.
She is survived by her sons, Skip and his wife, Suzanne Welles, of Franktown, Steve Welles of Frisco, and Phelps and his wife, Lana Welles, of Maple Valley, Wash.; daughters, Libby and her husband, Nick Reid, of Port Townsend, Wash., and Leslie Welles of Centennial; sisters, Ann Chamberlain of Clarke Summit, Penn., and Rowena and her husband, Fred Montgomery, of St. Charles, Ill.; granddaughters, Corie Robertson of Fort Collins, Lisa and Megan Robertson of Denver, Sarah Welles of Boulder and Phoebe Reid of Port Townsend, Wash.; grandsons, Jeremy Welles of Boulder and Tyler Reid of Port Townsend, Wash.; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
