Moving on to Denver

Wrestlers head to state

Three Soroco and three Hayden wrestlers advanced to next weekend's 2006 Colorado State Wrestling Championships with strong performances Saturday during regional competition.

Soroco junior Joel Schlegel, freshman Justin Iacovetto and sophomore Dennis Morgan will begin wrestling Thursday at the three-day state tournament at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Hayden senior Isaac Haskins and sophomores Coy Letlow and Aaron Haskins also advanced out of the tough Region 1 tournament.

Schlegel won a regional title at 112 pounds -- his second regional title in as many years. Wrestlers who have top regional finishes are matched against lower-seeded wrestlers in the state tournament, meaning Schlegel should get a good draw for next weekend's competition.

Iacovetto placed second at 103 pounds, falling to the state's top-ranked wrestler from Dolores County.

"They looked real good," Rams coach Doug Gates said. "They both had really good kids in the semifinals."

Morgan placed fourth at 215 pounds, winning his wrestle-back, 8-0, against a wrestler from Norwood He had been wrestling at 189 but opted to move up a weight class to have a better chance at making it to state.

Letlow was the top Hayden wrestler, placing third at 160 pounds. Isaac and Aaron Has-kins were fourth at 152 and 189 pounds, respectively.

Zed Wheelock (103) and Jake Magee (140) placed fifth. Mitchell Vedepo (112), Mitchell Doolin (125) and David Blair (145) also wrestled well.
