Sweetheart cross-country race on Sunday
Friday, February 10, 2006
Bill Philip has a sweet race for cross-country skiing enthusiasts.
"It's the sweetheart race," he said. "People get to dress up in dresses with hearts on them. It's a chance to cross-dress for those so inclined."
The race starts at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Steamboat Ski Touring Center and is part of the Nordic Challenge Race Series. A costume contest also will be held.
In recognition of Valentine's Day, the race will be 14 kilometers. A recreational 5K and a children's 3K also will be offered. Racers can ski classic or skate style. A portion of the proceeds raised from the recreational entry fees will be given to Horizons Specialized Services.
Horizons is a nonprofit group that provides services and support to people with developmental disabilities in a five-county region of Northwest Colorado.
Pre-registration is available through the Steamboat Ski Touring Center. Race-day registration is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Philip encouraged people to pre-register or come early on race day so the races can start on time. The cost to race is $14 for early registration and $16 on race day. The entry fee for children 12 and younger is $8.
